If you’ve read my last two blogs, you know I’ve been sorting through some friendships that have left me brokenhearted and struggling with rejection and abandonment.

In the midst of it all God has been speaking to my heart.

Though I’m anxious to hear from Him, my heart is still broken. It’s been wounded, and abused. Though I have loved deeply, I’ve not always received that love in return. In a fallen world it makes me ask, God who can I trust? Who can I give my heart to? God when will I stop being disappointed?

Love is often the topic of women’s conversations. We learn it early on. Think of every fairytale you’ve ever heard… “And they lived Happily Ever After.”

Ask any woman what that means. They’ll tell you- it means FOREVER.

FOREVER.

FOREVER.

A week later they aren’t speaking. Someone told a secret, or stole a boyfriend, or broke a promise.
The friendship is over.
What happened to forever?

4-EVER
A prettier girl comes along. A more popular guy comes along. Someone gets bored. The couple breaks up. Just another meaningless relationship. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.
What happened to forever?

I, Kyle, take you, Rachel,
To have and to hold, from this day forward,
for better, for worse,
for richer, for poorer,
in sickness and in health,
to love and to cherish,
till death do us part.
Someone isn’t understanding enough. Someone isn’t patient. Someone feels unsatisfied.
Someone has an affair.
What happened to forever?

These are horrific examples of forever, and in our society they’re easy to find. It can be scary- especially for someone like me. I trust easily, and I love with my whole heart. I’m bound to be disappointed! I’ll probably always have a broken heart. After all, FOREVER must just be an illusion. It must be some idyllic concept created by fairy tale writers and Hollywood producers. FOREVER doesn’t really happen…

And then I hear Chris Tomlin in my head…

From the rising to the setting sun
His love endures forever…

Forever God is faithful
Forever God is strong
Forever God is with us
Forever
Forever

And then I go to His Word…

Glorious and majestic are his deeds, and his righteousness endures forever.

Psalm 111:9
He provided redemption for his people; he ordained his covenant forever— holy and awesome is his name.
