“I miss Mayberry
Sitting on the porch drinking
Ice cold Cherry Coke
Where everything is black and white
Picking on a six string
Where people pass by and you call
Them by their first name
Watching the clouds roll by…”
Those are a few of the lyrics to “I Miss Mayberry” by Rascal Flatts. It’s been running through my mind a lot these days. Why? Because I’ve realized- I found Mayberry! I’m working right in the middle of it!
Are you laughing yet? Or maybe you don’t believe me? Well let me tell you, I’ve been here over a month, and I have yet to see a Starbucks. Even worse, I haven’t even seen a WAL-MART! My co-workers keep telling me they exist, but I don’t know if I believe them…
Last weekend I was puppy-sitting for my co-worker Caroline. The directions to her house included:
Go past the man in his front yard playing horseshoes.
Do not run over the chickens.
Go past the cornfields, chicken-houses, and cow-pastures.
Turn left at the llamas…
No, I’m not kidding! If you want to see pictures of it all, go here – HA! Caroline and I have laughed so much these past few days- there are moments when we feel as if we’re on the foreign mission field! haha!
It’s true, there are lots of adjustments to “the middle of nowhere”, but it has some incredible benefits too. Last night, this is the sight I got to enjoy on my drive home….
The pictures don’t do it justice- believe me! I was so astounded at God’s glory (and in the middle of nowhere, you really get to enjoy it in an amazing way!) Suddenly the song in my head switched from “I Miss Mayberry”. All I could hear was one of my favorite songs by Desperation Band- “Beauty of the Lord”…
“Jesus Your love
Has come one step closer
I will trust
That You will never let me go
Jesus Your love
Has won me over
All my trust
Has found no other
I will declare the beauty of the Lord
Nothing compares to the beauty of the Lord
Jesus Your love takes my breath away
I’m living everyday for the beauty of the Lord
Jesus Your love takes my breath away.”
Thank you God for calling me here, and thank you for such a beautiful expression of Your GLORY!
